Sherman was the editor and publisher of the Fort Des Moines Gazette. He published the paper out of one of the former officer cabins of old Fort Des Moines called Raccoon Row. L.P. Sherman also served as the third mayor of Fort Des Moines.
Lampson purchased a house from his brother Hoyt Sherman in 1890. It is located at 1052 26th Street, Des Moines, Iowa.
