Recruiting Office Busy With Applicants for WAAC

(Top) Girls in front of the recruiting posters at the Old Federal building were a common sight Wednesday as they paused to read their application blanks for enlistment in the women's army auxiliary corps. Recruiting officers inside the building had never seen anything like it. Among girls who sought to apply for service were Rose Ross (left), 21, of 1235 Fourteenth st., a sewing machine operator at the Boyt Harness Co., and Miriam Holst, 25, of 5418 Shriver ave., Central Life Insurance Co. employee.

(Bottom) Discussing service in the auxiliary corps with Tech. Sergt. James H. Reasor, army recruiting officer, are Mrs. Nanette Wakefield (left), 45, of 667 Sixteenth st., and Rita Higdon, 24, of Davis City, Ia. Mrs. Wakefield, who taught instructors how to make surgical dressings in the first world war, said she has been trying to get into war work since this one started. Miss Higdon, a rural school teacher for six years, said she wants to help her "boy friend," who is in the army.
